You will often see kangaroo described as seven to ten times stronger than cowhide. That claim needs a qualifier, and the qualifier is the most useful part of it.
Figures in that range appear regularly in leathercraft discussions and trade material, usually referring to tensile strength at the same thickness. We have not independently reproduced those tests, so we are not presenting the number as our own laboratory result.

The usual explanation is fibre structure. Kangaroo leather has a comparatively tight and uniform arrangement through its thickness, which allows a thin skin to carry a high tensile load.
The important phrase in all of this is at equal thickness. A one millimetre kangaroo skin can be remarkably strong for a one millimetre skin. That does not mean it replaces an eight ounce vegetable-tanned belt blank in a project where thickness, rigidity, and edge mass are part of the design.
Strength is not the only property that matters, and on most projects it is not even the deciding one.
Strength per millimetre is only half the story. The other half is whether your project actually needs those millimetres.

The strength advantage of kangaroo lives largely in what it can do without adding bulk. The structural advantage of cowhide lives largely in the fact that bulk is available when you need it.

Kangaroo Leather vs Cowhide on the Bench
The way the material handles may matter more than the headline strength number. This is the part you cannot read off a spec sheet, and it is where most regretted purchases actually go wrong.
Kangaroo
Kangaroo is usually thin, supple, and unusually resistant to stretch for such a lightweight leather. That combination is a major reason plaiters and whipmakers value it. It cuts cleanly and can produce very fine strands without immediately giving up strength.
It also wrinkles readily. One maker described kangaroo as a poor choice for a solid, self-supporting bag because it creases more than most heavier leathers. That does not make it bad bag leather. It means it works better as a flexible exterior, lining, gusset, reinforcement, or layered component than as the only thing holding the bag upright.
At around one millimetre, the leather can be so fine that the grain and flesh sides are not immediately obvious at a glance. It also takes water readily, so casing, dyeing, and wet work should be approached carefully and tested on an offcut first.
Packer recommends relaxing creases by laying the skin flat under weight, or using low heat through a cotton barrier. It warns buyers to ask before applying heat to waxed or heavily oiled articles, which is good advice to follow rather than discover.
Plaiting is the job kangaroo wins outright. Fine strands that hold tension without failing are exactly what the material does best.
Cowhide
On kangaroo leather vs cowhide, this is where cowhide pulls ahead, because it covers a much broader range of jobs. The tooling and carving tradition is built largely around vegetable-tanned cowhide, because it accepts moisture, stamping, modelling, beveling, and burnishing in ways kangaroo generally does not.
Belts, holsters, sheaths, rigid cases, and structured bag bodies often use cowhide because thickness and stiffness are part of the function, not a compromise. And cowhide is far easier to source again when a project grows, a customer wants a second item, or you make a mistake and need another piece.
Bench note: do not swap kangaroo into an existing cowhide pattern and assume nothing else changes. Losing thickness changes:
- Edge finishing
- Fold behavior
- Rivet and screw length
- Hardware seating
- Seam bulk
- Reinforcement requirements
- Whether the finished piece will hold its shape at all
Tooling is the job cowhide wins outright. Thickness is what lets an impression hold a crisp shoulder instead of flattening back out.
Cut Selection Is Where First-Time Roo Buyers Lose Money
Not all of a skin is worth the same. Every hide has firm, tight fibre through the middle of the back and looser, stretchier fibre out toward the belly and the extremities. That is true of cowhide and it is true of kangaroo. What changes between them is how much that costs you.
A croupon is the firm center cut with the loose belly trimmed away. Suppliers sell it as its own item precisely because it is the part most makers actually want. Rocky Mountain, for example, offers its Italian vegetable-tanned kangaroo in both whole hides and croupons.
On a cowhide side, belly waste is annoying. On a kangaroo skin it is expensive, and the reason is simple arithmetic. Roo skins are small, narrow, and triangular, so the loose perimeter is a much larger share of the total area than it is on a large cowhide side. This is the same reason Packer advises buyers to expect roughly 80 percent usable cutting area from a kangaroo skin.
That yield figure changes how you should read prices. Comparing a whole skin against a croupon on sticker price alone is comparing two different quantities of usable leather.
How to decide which cut to buy
- Buy a croupon when every piece needs to be firm and consistent, such as straps, belts, wallet spines, holster reinforcement, or anything where a soft patch would show as a defect.
- Buy a whole hide when you can put the looser areas to work, such as linings, gussets, pull tabs, practice pieces, or small goods you can nest around the soft regions. You are paying less per square foot and taking on the sorting yourself.
- Buy a whole skin for lace if you are cutting your own strands, because long strands come off the length of the back and you will want the full run of firm fibre.
- Ask where the cut came from when a listing says neither. Two skins at the same price and thickness are not the same purchase if one is center cut and the other includes the belly.
Bench note: on a small skin, lay out your pattern before you cut anything, not after. On a cowhide side you can usually recover from a bad first cut by moving over a few inches. On a kangaroo skin, one badly placed cut through the center back can take the best part of the whole piece with it.
Kangaroo Leather vs Cowhide on Cost, Compared Fairly
Kangaroo is a specialty leather and is usually priced that way. Tannery-direct buying changes the picture, but it does not erase the difference.
At the exchange rate available when we checked, Packer nappa around 0.9 to 1.1 millimetres began near a USD $43 equivalent, with some clearance skins near USD $20 before freight. Rocky Mountain’s Italian vegetable-tanned kangaroo started at $89.99.

Cowhide has a much wider price range. It is available as premium full-price tannery stock, standard commercial sides, remnants, offcuts, overstock, and factory seconds. That makes cowhide easier to buy cheaply and much easier to replace.
So the fair summary is two sentences rather than one. Per square foot, cowhide will usually win on price and predictability. Per unit of strength at very low thickness, kangaroo is difficult to match.
Availability and Legal Differences
This is the one difference that can decide the material before you draw a pattern. Cowhide is widely available and carries no species-specific commercial restriction of this kind.
Kangaroo is a specialty material, usually sourced from Australian skins, and California Penal Code section 653o names it directly. Maverick states on its own product pages that it will not ship kangaroo products to California.
That legal difference is not a side issue. It can determine whether one material is practical for a maker or a business at all.
